RUF BTR Conversion

What is RUF BTR?

A word on the Ruf BTRs, including conversions. In Ruf’s vernacular, BTR is a single turbo engine (K27 in this case), CTR and or turbo-R are twin turbo engines. Since Porsche had the 993TT in their model-line up since 1996, the BTRs are usually done for 1995 model year for 993s. Ruf built a total of eighteen (18) 993 BTRs worldwide. These are true Ruf VIN cars. I do not know how many are in the States, if any. Then there are BTR conversions, like my car. These cars started with Porsche VINs and received the BTR conversion kits. As these converted cars started as naturally aspirated engines, and became turbo cars at the end, Ruf had to design and fabricate all the duct works, brackets, plenums, intercooler and other bits for the engine bay. That is why a BTR conversion costs a lot more than a Turbo-R conversion. I am aware of three 993 BTR conversions in the States.

The original owner of my car was a professional opera singer and a classical musician in Germany. Mr. Alois Ruf, being a big fan of classical music, became good friends with the original owner. In August 2000, the original owner sent the car to Phaffenhausen for a complete BTR conversion. The car had about 75,000 miles on it then. The owner paid for significant upgrades (items in bold) above the standard BTR conversion package.

Given the mileage on the car, Ruf completely tore down and rebuilt the engine. The Ruf invoice and information from original owner listed the following as work done with the BTR conversion:

Ruf BTR package with single K 27 turbo. Compression ratio is reduced to 8.4:1.
Titanium connecting rods.
Ruf wiring harness.
Ruf steering rack.
Longer 5th and 6th gear.
Additional front oil cooler.
Turbo S rear spoiler.
Heat exchanger system.
Replacement of steering wheel.
Main bearing.
Ruf suspension system.
18” Ruf wheels by OZ.
RUF sway bars, Front end RS bushings, tie-rod ends, ball joints and A-arms.
Ruf brake system with Ruf logo calipers.
Medium weight flywheel.
Heavy-duty clutch plate.
Ruf plenum and exhaust system with Ruf exhaust tips.
Ruf short shifter.
Custom Ruf insignia package (more information below).
Braided steel brake lines.
Recaro A8 race seats (more information below).
993 RS side skirts and front corner spoilers.
Tech-Art grill insert with brake duct and fog lights.
Tech-Art aluminum pedal sets.
Carbon fiber aerodynamic side mirrors.
Ruf A-pillar rain gutter fairings.
Removable 4 point Schroth racing belts on driver's side

Car's Performance After the Conversion

Motor produces 426 HP. Torque is 435 ft. lbs (590 NM). Car weights approximately 3,100 lbs. 0-60 times about 3.7 seconds, top speed is between 192 and 196 MPH (RUF spec. is 308 km/hr.) depending on weather, load, etc.

Recaro A-8 Seats

The Recaro A-8 race seats are Porsche seat options for the 993GT2s in Europe. Porsche never offered them for the American market. It is the only full-tilt race seat that retains access to the rear seats. The seats are designed to provide full cornering supports at the shoulder, lower back, and thigh areas. My seats are custom ordered with water buffalo hides that are highly textured to provide more grip in the corners. The seats may look creased in the photos, but that actually are the natural grain pattern of the water buffalo hides. The seats are extremely comfortable for long trips.

What makes this RUF BTR unique?

It is a narrow-body 2 wheel drive Porsche turbo.
It is an American spec. car fully converted at Pfaffenhausen, with the strict QA and testing protocol only available in the Ruf factory in Germany. The car is a fifty-States Porsche and routinely passes CA smog tests.
Custom Ruf insignia package: The standard Ruf insignia colors are black and silver. Black for light color cars, and silver for dark color cars. To create something truly special for his good friend, Mr. Alois Ruf offered a one-off gold insignia package for this car as it would go beautifully with the metallic black exterior and black interior. The insignia package consisted of gold exterior insignia, carpet logo, caliper logo, dash bezel rings, and interior vent trims. This is the only Ruf car in the world with the gold insignia package.
Mr. Alois Ruf’s personal autograph is on the driver’s side visor.
THE CURRENT OWNER

I drove an E39 M5 at that time, and after driving a friend’s 993, decided that I would really enjoy a 993. After thoroughly researching the regular 993s, 993TT, the 993TTS and Rufs, I decided I would want a Ruf, the epitome of Porsche automobile achievements. I only wanted the 993 as it is the most beautiful 911-body style in my eyes. It is the last of the air-cooled flat-six engines. And it is the last Porsche model built before the Japanese-influenced mass production runs took hold.

I found the car on-line in July 2003, and finally shipped the car over from Germany in December 2003. The car had 97,000 miles on it then.

Since I bought the car, I have done the following work on the car. A lot was deferred-maintenance, and some major improvements as well.

In spring of 2004, I realized that the car had a lot of under-carriage rust as it had spent nine years in the German mountain areas. I replaced the following items and thoroughly de-rusted the car:

Front uprights.
Entire suspension system with Bilstein PSS9s.
Entire brake system with Brembo Big Red system.
ABS speed sensors.
Ball joint.
All wheel bearings.
Front hub.
Power steering lines.
TRG front and rear sway bars with drop-links.
Front protection bar.
Corner balance.
Every nut, bolts and brackets under the car.
Full alarm system with remote entry key.
HID headlights.

In early 2005, I detected an issue with oil leak and decided that I would bring the car’s power train to as-new conditions. I had the following work done:

New K-27 Hi-Flow single turbo from Ultimate Motor Werks.
Bosh alternator.
Cylinder head work: new valve guides, stem seals, machine valve seats.
New billet aluminum diverter valve.
Complete top-end rebuilds and complete service.
New cylinder head temperature senders and electrical connectors.
RS engine and transmission mounts.
All belts and filters.
130 cell race CATs.

In May 2005, I hit gravel on a steep downgrade, spun and damaged the front end of the car. Luckily being a rear-engine layout, all mechanical components were unaffected. While repairing the bodywork, I had the following cosmetic work done:

18” Ruf 3-piece forged wheels.
European front bumper.
Ruf stainless steel doorsills.
Ruf aluminum shifter knob.
Clear bra including full hood wrap.
Corner balance.

Since then, I have changed the rear main seal, and replaced the gas line. The car is now perfect in my eyes, both mechanically and aesthetically. It has 126,500 miles and runs extremely strong and is a truly beautiful car. I keep the car garaged and under cover unless I was driving it. This is truly my pride and joy.
