In 2008 we were invited by Modified Magazine to participate in the Castrol Syntec Top Shop Challenge. We were flattered to be invited to compete against such shops as Cosworth, SP Engineering and 034 Motorsports to name a few. With engines ranging from a Nissan RB25, VQ35 and SR20 all the way to a twin turbo charged small block chevy the goal was to make the most HP per liter on 100 octane fuel.

We set out to meet a lofty goal, 1000 horsepower on 100 octane. I’m usually pretty conservative when it comes to horsepower figures and this time I really put it out there, knowing that we’d have to work hard to reach those numbers. We started out by taking our Mitsubishi Drag Lancer Evolution VIII out of commission so we could use its chassis to build our engine combination. Once we completed our build we did our initial dyno tuning on our Dynojet four wheel drive dyno. After a few hours on the dyno to break the motor in and do some test runs, we stopped at 830 wheel horsepower knowing we had a good base map. The tune still had a little bit left in it but we were going to save it for the engine dyno.

Being the only team from out of state we had to pack up our 4G63 engine and accessory stand and ship it to sunny California. We arrived at the dyno facility a few weeks later to install the motor on the engine dyno and get down to business. Part of the test for the Castrol Syntec Top Shop Challenge was a load test, where the engine is put under load for 30 minutes to ensure its reliability. With the motor singing along at lower RPM’s we watched the motor run under low boost as the load was held on the engine dyno.

With that part of the test done the real punishment was about to begin. We did a few low RPM pulls to see if the tune from the chassis dyno would need to be tweaked for the engine dyno. I was happy to the see the tune was almost identical except for the engine wanting to run more boost due to the increased loading. To capture the dyno data we had to run the engine through a 5000 rpm sweep, for example starting at 4500 and ending at 9500.

There were some scary moments during our session on the engine dyno. A boost cut situation and then the 12 volt lead disconnected from the power supply caused the engine dyno to shut down literally 100 rpm before the end of a couple runs. When the dyno shuts down it actually stops the motor in it’s tracks. I winced in pain as I watched the motor go from 9400 rpm down to a dead stop in a matter of 2 seconds. The headers were glowing red, and everything was crackling from the heat. I just imagined the exhaust valves hanging open smoking hot and the poor pistons getting heat soaked. This just shows the durability of the components such as the Supertech valves, Ross pistons, Manley rods, and the K1 crank. We’ve always used those companies’ products because they have proven to perform in all of our engine builds.

The first full power run clicked off 980 horsepower but it wasn’t the magical 1000 number we were after. We checked the ice water in our cooler that fed the liquid to air intercooler core from Precision Turbo. All of our partial runs during the session had melted the ice and the water was room temperature. I checked my log on the AEM EMS and sure enough the air intake temperature reflected the lack of ice. The AEM EMS has a very good boost control setup so I added another pound of boost and we refilled the cooler with ice. With the intake temps down in the 40 degree range and boost exactly at 41psi the power jumped to 1035 horsepower!

We met our goal and it really came down to putting the rights parts together on a solid motor combination with good tuning. From the custom intake manifold that we fabricated to the Moroso dry sump oiling system, everything worked together on paper and on the dyno. I knew that we couldn’t skimp on anything during his whole project. With high boost we needed good spark, so a Sparktech coil on plug ignition system kept us from having misfires. High quality fittings and lines from Goodrich kept the fuel and oiling system leak free and durable, just like on our race cars.

In the end it was a lot of hard work from all the teams, great support from parts companies, and a showcase of what can be done with all these different engines.

Echt geweldig mooi gedaan met die kleine en grote turbo, maar ik heb ergens een filmpje gezien dat de auto in de fik vloog, thuis eens even zoeken of ik dat filmpje kan vinden.
